William Burroughs / Local Stop on the Nova Express Stephen Davis Books Reviews
Rock journalist Stephen Davis, early in his itinerary, came to Burroughs by way of painter/writer Brion Gysin and their mutual interest in Tangier, above all the musicians of Jajouka. The interview at the center of this fine little volume finds the master talespinner in a gracious mood, both candid and laconic, at a time when he has successfully navigated the transition from notoriety to enduring counterculture celebrity. Davis reminds us, moreover, what it was like for a young writer to meet a hero of the times and how Burroughs himself wore that fame and its obligations.
Interesting interview with William s. Burroughs, though the section devoted to the Jimmy Page/WSB interview from Crawdaddy was rather lean and lackluster. The opening essay on Burroughs' life and publishing history was okay, if a tad pedantic.
The main interview, while written in the seventies, reads like it could have been conducted today, given the topics.covered. A worthwhile read for any WSB aficionado.
This is another great title to come out of Inkblot Publication's productive 2013 publishing program. This title, which I must add is beautifully presented in its design, centres around a thought provoking interview that Stephen Davis (Hammer of the Gods, Old Gods Almost Dead, Jajouka Rolling Stone) conducted with William S. Burroughs in 1974. The interview, which covers some territory not usually seen in interviews with Burroughs (who considered it one of the favourite interviews), is not only informative but also helps to shine a light on Burroughs as both person and writer. This interview also helps to set up the final section of the book which details the circumstances surrounding the infamous interview Burroughs did with Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. This exposition is at times hilarious, as Davis' with an insider's eye dissects the insular world of Led Zeppelin and the coming together of these two very different artists. All in all, for readers interested in William S. Burroughs, this title is essential and I hope that Inkblot Publications continue to publish such well designed and thought provoking books.
