At first I thought I would love this book. It seemed to have such promise. I liked the fact that the heroine's brother, Archibald Douglas, is based on a real person. I thought the author was going to give us rich and interesting characters. As it turns out the only really positive thing I can say about the heroine is that she is beautiful, romance-novel beautiful. She has rich, flowing black hair; soft, white, flawless skin; and violet-colored eyes. Pretty standard romance novel fare. I have read this description of ideal beauty many times before but you know what, I have never actually in real life seen anyone with purple eyes.

Other than the superficial, our heroine is really rather ugly to me. She starts out emotionally beaten down after a 10-year marriage to a very verbally abusive husband who enjoyed humiliating her at every turn. She married at only 13-years-old so she essentially grew-up in this horrible environment. At first I was rooting for her to find herself and become the strong woman she always wanted to be. It turns out she just became a shrew rather than a strong woman. Instead of working to earn David's trust she tries to manipulate him into sharing his thoughts and plans with her by withholding sex. As far as I could tell she did not really do anything to gain the trust she wanted except complain, pout, and make ridiculous decisions. He asked her to stay in the castle and keep herself and her daughters safe when he had to go away. But no, instead she is easily tricked into leaving thereby putting everyone in danger. She could not seem to understand why he was so upset. I was annoyed with her too.

She was clearly not a good match for David. Rather than support him emotionally as he worked to keep them all safe, she undermined him with her nagging. She seemed to have 21st century sensibilities and complained about any violence. I got tired for her haranguing him about his decisions.

There is a scene with David's brother, Robbie, that I think sums up my problems with Alison perfectly. She and David have just had a fight after she finds out that he beheaded one of their enemies. She yells at him that he should have shown restraint and they part, angry with each other. She then sees Robbie and asks Robbie why he is upset too.

"Ye want to know?" Robbie said, turning fierce green eyes on her that were so like David's. "Truly?"
"I do."
"Nay, ye don't," he said. "You want to believe what you want to believe."

He goes on to tell her how David beheaded the enemy to save their youngest brother. She is shocked although why I am still not sure.

"Why did David not tell me?" she asked.
"Loyalty is everything to him," Robbie said. "He expected ye to trust him, to believe in him, without requiring an explanation."

That scene sums it up for me. She is a judgmental, unsupportive, nagging shrew and I wanted more for a Highland Laird than that.

This book overall had a decent if unoriginal plot but for me the negatives outweighed the positives.

I want a refund! Boring, repetative, h is a whiny shrew that got on my nerves. H and h are described in one way but come out the opposite. And the sex part with Patrick, really? First and last book from this author. Very inconsistent, impossible to connect with. So frustrating because it could have been such a fun read.
This is the second Margaret Mallory book I’ve read and it seems like all her books started off with the hero’s laying seige to to the heroine’s castle because they are widows who have been forced to wed young to despicable men that died. I read Knight of Pleasure before and in that book it started off the same as this one.

There was nothing different in this story as compared to the other highlander novels I’ve read. All of them are almost the same. Same boring boring story with nothing different. Hero lay siege to widows castle to exert revenge because of the wrongdoings of her dead husband, love blossoms, dead husbands relatives causing trouble because they feel they deserve the inheritance.

That’s all there is to it. I hate the heroine Alison. She’s too stubborn for her own good. Putting David’s life in jeopardy. There’s a limit to stupidity and she definitely crossed it. David on the other hand loves her so much he lay down his life repeatedly to protect her all the time.

Also the book needs more proper editing. Too many grammatical errors.
I read a LOT and I have to say this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. Not once did I skip pages or skim through any paragraphs. The author stayed true to the characters when they evolved from their abusive and lonely pasts to finally trust and love each other. There were a lot of tense, emotional and angry situations but I never had to second-guess what was going on, the storyline was clear and moved along without leaving important details out. I never had to backtrack to see what I had missed. I did wonder what happened to David's ex-mistress after Alison arrived at Hume castle but really, the storyline was in full force at that point and adding her in would have made unnecessary drama the story didn't need. I also liked the fact it was based on real historical events and people.
I loved the story itself but a little to "racy" for me. I wish there were more stories like this but with less explicit sex scenes!!
