Lailah The Styclar Saga Book 1 eBook Nikki Kelly

So between NaNo and life I have really struggled to find some time to read. There is a large stack of books sitting next to my desk and I’m slowly chipping away at them. I was so excited to start Lailah but I struggled to really engage in the first half. It took a few days and several chapters for me to get hooked but once I did I began to enjoy the story immensely. The only thing I love more than a strong female character is a strong mythology and this definitely has some.

Synopsis: A girl named Cessie encounters a whole mess of vampires. She’s not shocked by this, girl’s been through these things before.Turns out she helps save a hot vampire named Jonah who runs with a hot Angel named Gabriel. He knows Cessie, or as he calls her Lailah. Throw in a ton of Purebreed nonsense and some crazy mythology and you’e got a solid first book.

What I liked: The story itself. The mythology was very riveting and I found myself reading for the sole purpose of trying to figure out what the heck was going down. Kelly did a tremendous job of chalking enough back story in to hook you, but left enough mystery to make it interesting. Not only was the mythology very interesting, but the character’s back-story was super interesting. The introduction of Lailah’s past and introduction of several key events kept the action up.

What I didn’t like: Things moved a little slow…well, maybe slow is not the write word. It just didn’t have enough umph to catch me from the first page like some other books. Lailah/ Cessie was not the most engaging female character and I found the love triangle a little trite.

Overall I liked the book. It was one that grabbed me halfway, but still grabbed me. If you stick with it it’ll grab you too. 3/5 (note, I’m changing my rating systems to coincide with those of Goodreads)

Lailah The Styclar Saga Book 1 eBook Nikki Kelly Reviews

Good book
It was absolutely no secret how much I wanted to read Lailah and let me just say that all my stalking tenaciousness paid off tenfold. I was absolutely thrilled with this book. Nikki Kelly has devised the perfect game of cat & mouse with a plot line that pulls the reader along through the book without ever feeling frustrated or forced. I was RIVETED!!
Lailah is a story about a lost girl who knows she is anything but normal, she has no family, no real home…all she has are vague recollections of memories and the fact that she knows that for some reason she can’t stay dead. Lailah stumbles across a vampire named Jonah, and little by little a few tiny pieces start falling into place. When a face she sees in her dreams finally becomes a reality, she knows his name is Gabriel & she knows he meant very much to her a long time and many lives ago. Will Jonah or Gabriel be able to fill in the blank spots in her mind and her past?
I loved going on this journey with Lailah as she discovered who she truly was. The perfectly paced plot and well thought out storyline kept me constantly on my toes. Just when I thought I’d seen vampires and angels done in every way possible but, Nikki’s imaginative writing renewed my faith and breathed life into the otherwise stale topics. The work and effort she put into it is abundantly apparent while reading. This book while complex, due to multiple story lines overlapping, never felt messy for me. The vital information to finding out who Lailah really was fed piece by piece until it brilliantly fell into place at the end. Lailah was such an interesting M.C. While I sometimes thought her decisions childish and hasty, I understood that it was exactly what the author had wanted me to feel so BRAVO for feels!!

I would like to address the issue of “the love triangle”. I personally never have a problem with insta-love or love triangles. That being said our little miss Lailah keeps on dying and waking up so she is bound to have a few ex’s lying around. It just so happens a few of them turned out to be vampires or an angel. What im saying is that for once I think the dreaded love triangle was an acceptable cliche’ due to Lailah’s ummm…condition.

Having these two men vie for your attention wouldn’t seem like all that big of a problem to me. Lailah knows she has a connection to Gabriel. His face is one of the only things she remembers each time she wakes from death. Yet, after she saves Jonah’s life, a bond is forged and so is their undeniable chemistry. Which man Lailah chooses really has more to do with who she chooses to become. You’ll just have to decide for yourself once you read it! If your a lover of angels, vampires, and girls named Lailah who are shrouded in mystery, you should definitely give this one a go.
Fantastic book, I read this even before it because a big thing on Wattpad, and I am so proud of Nikki and her accomplishments with the Styclar Series! They should make a movie from these books.
